Bandit - A curious cancer story
Bandit is a 9yo Male Labrador / Rottweiler Cross who lives with his sister and his fur family in a beautiful hinterland area on the Sunshine Coast. With a loving family and healthy, relaxed lifestyle it is difficult to comprehend why he suddenly developed a very unusual type of cancer.
Within the space of one month, a few lumps in his armpit and groin areas that were thought to be lipomas had progressed to be a lumpy rash affecting most of his body. Bandit seemed well in himself, and wasn’t itchy, but given the unusual nature of the rash his family opted to proceed straight to biopsy.
The lab examination revealed an unusual type of lymph cancer affecting the skin, with the only conventional option being oral chemotherapy which was not reported to be curative and had the potential to affect his liver and bone marrow and make Bandit quite unwell. Bandit’s family decided to explore holistic veterinary options.
Bandit was seen the following day after an urgent telephone call convinced us that we simply had to fit him in on a very busy Saturday morning! The skin lumps were very large, and distributed all over his back, sides and belly with some also progressing down his legs and under his neck.
The lumps didn’t appear to be painful or itchy but some were ulcerating on the surface. We immediately started a variety of cancer treatments, including two alternating homeopathic remedies at high doses, high doses of fish oil for the protective omega-3 fatty acids, anti-oxidants, a mushroom blend, Chinese herbs, oral vitamin C and a diet change. A topical spray was also formulated with essential oils and calendula tincture to use on the worst areas.
Within 48 hours the inflammation in his skin had settled a little, and we saw him two days later to start an Intravenous Vitamin C protocol. We do this for many of our cancer patients if they are amenable to coming into the clinic on a weekly basis and having a cannula placed into their vein. This provides them with high doses of Vitamin C in solution which bathes every cell directly with its anti-cancer and anti-oxidant properties.
Bandit coped well with his treatment and so returned for repeat treatments on a weekly basis unless his veins needed additional recovery time between treatments.
Some changes were made to his treatment regime along the way with different homeopathics and Chinese herbal powders incorporated at different stages. His family was also provided with ketogenic diet instructions to ensure his body was in a state of ketosis which is a naturally cancer-resistant state as there is less fuel available to feed the cancer cells.
In the initial stages of treatment new lumps were cropping up everywhere, on his face, legs, and even his eyelids! Now, two months on, we seem to be witnessing what we hope to be a remarkable recovery. The lesions at the front of the body are healing and resolving, and the large ulcerating and necrosing lesions on his trunk have fixed. He has maintained his chilled-out, loving demeanour throughout the process, and we hope with all our hearts that he will make a fully successful recovery.
With the dedication of his family, the love of his fur sister and feline friend, and The Natural Vets team at his back, he has the best chance we could give him!
